About this category

Fence toppings: types and selection rules

A topping is fitted at the head of an existing fence to lengthen the path over the obstacle and make it harder to get body weight across the edge. The bracket is clamped to the post, and carrier wires are strung between brackets to hold razor wire, barbed wire or concertina coils.

The category covers straight extensions, single arms angled outwards, double Y brackets, add-on panels that simply raise the fence height, razor-mesh toppings, and the full set of mounting accessories: clamps, holders, clips and fixings for posts of different sections.

Selection starts with the condition of the existing posts, because they carry the added load. An angled arm gives more protection than a straight extension but must not cross the plot line or overhang public land. The number of carrier wires and the fixing spacing follow from the chosen coil type and the height of the topping.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do the posts have to be replaced?
Usually not. Brackets are clamped to the existing posts; replacement only comes up with corroded or undercut sections.
Straight or angled?
Straight for internal boundaries and where nothing may cross the plot line. Angled gives a higher protection level but has to stay within the boundary.
Is it lawful next to a public road?
Sharp elements must not overhang public land and must sit at a height compliant with local rules. We confirm the selection in the quotation.
